Local SEO is all about getting your business to show up locally in the Google search engines. For example, if you own a painting business in Chicago, you may want your website to show up when users type in "painter Chicago" or "house painter near me" in the Google search bar. These search phrases are known as local search queries and are highly sought over by business owners. Business owners target them because they know the potential business these keywords can bring to their business.

Keyword Research

The first thing that you will want to perform is keyword research because it will give you insight into the keyword's competitiveness and give you a deeper understanding of what your audience is typing into the search engines.

Sure, you may think you know what you should rank for, but frequently you will find out there your users are using different phrases you have not thought of using. Some of the best keyword tools are Ahref and Moz. You can also go with free tools such as Google Keyword Planner. There are limitations to Google tools if you do not have a Google Ads account, which is why it is better to try out the paid tools for keyword research.

Google Maps

The next step you can take is setting up a Google My Business(GMB) listing to get better local rankings. Setting up a GMB account is relatively easy and should only take 20 minutes at the most. You will need to provide your business name, phone number, and address, which Google will verify by sending you a postcard. Once that is set up, your listing will appear in the Google Maps for customers to find you.
